Narrative

On this page we have two videos which are narratives. So there are no questions and answers to help pinpoint the key facts. Listening is more complicated. To help you listen you can do some preparation.

Firstly, you should look at the title and guess what kind of information you expect to hear. Is the narrative factual? Will it contain numbers, dates and places? Listen out for these to help you pinpoint the key facts.

1) Rochdale Canal

Did the visual help you with the narrative? Was it distracting? What can you do if you find the visual distracting? You might like to try listening to the audio only version.

The next narrative piece is fictional. This is much more difficult to predict. So you need to listen for tone of voice, pauses, emphasis to identify the key elements of the story.

2) Gladys and George

What cues helped you with the story? How can this help you when you are listening to streaming audio/video where there is no time for preparation or prediction? You might like to compare with the audio only version.
