You are going to watch two very short clips. The  first one is a little girl explaining how to make tea. In UK tea is not only a drink but also a light meal we eat in the afternoon.

What do you expect to hear? Think about the vocabulary and think about the way children explain things. In this clip the adult clarifies each step. What differences do you hear between what the child says and how the adult reflects it back? What lessons can you learn from this habit? Which visual elements help you understand what is happening in the clip?

The next video is a short clip of a game of football in the garden. What language would you expect to hear when watching a family play football in the garden. Think about typical football vocabulary. Watch the clip and answer the questions at the end of the clip. What clues did you get from the video?

Think about these two clips - did the visual help you understand what the participants said. Was anything distracting in the clips?

In what ways can this exercise help you watch and understand many of the 'funny clips' on YouTube?

Now you can look at this video of a short interview about sport and leisure.

Which of the clips was easiest to understand? Can you explain why? What strategies did you use?
